On March 24 in Tokyo, minister of economic development Maxim Oreshkin met minister of economy, trade and industry of Japan Hiroshige Seco during a working visit to Japan.
“Statistics of 2016 reflect a drop by a quarter – only 16 billion dollars of turnover. Japan’s direct investment to Russia also declined. In the first three quarters of 2016 Japanese investments in Russia fell by 80%” Maxim Oreshkin said before the meeting.
At the same time, the Minister expressed confidence that implementation of the plan of cooperation between Russia and Japan will help to develop economic relations between the two countries.
Speaking about his appointment to the post of special representative of Russian president on trade and economic cooperation with Japan, the head of Russian Ministry of Economic Development noted that it was not a substitution for someone from the team, but its strengthening.
“The fact that you, Mr. Oreshkin, was appointed special representative to Japan is a manifestation of Russia’s desire to strengthen relations with our country” Hiroshige Seko stressed.
On March 14, 2017, Maxim Oreshkin was appointed special representative of the Russian president on trade and economic cooperation with Japan. Hiroshige Seko is responsible for the development of economic relations with Russia in the Japanese government.
In addition, during his visit, Maxim Oreshkin held a meeting with the head of Japanese-Russian Economic Committee of Japan Business Federation, chairman of Marubeni Corporation, Teruo Asad, and a group of representatives of Japanese business.
The representatives of Japanese business community welcomed the improvement of Russia’s position in international rating of Ease of Doing Business and noted that business in Russia has become easier and more effective. Participants also discussed topical issues of Russian-Japanese cooperation in the context of the agreements reached during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Japan on December 15-16 last year, when 68 corporate agreements were signed on the sidelines of the summit.
